HIGHER EDUCATION EMERGENCY RELIEF FUND

CARES GRANT

Aveda Institute Maine a Capilo School signed the Recipient’s Funding Certification and Agreement Emergency Financial Aid Grants to Students Under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act and returned it to the U.S. Department of Education on April 22, 2020. Aveda Institute Maine a Capilo School has used, or intends to use, no less than 50 percent of the funds received under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act to provide Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students.

Aveda Institute Maine a Capilo School received Emergency Financial Aid Grants in the amount of $150,196 from the Department pursuant to the institution’s Certification and Agreement for Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students.

Applications to apply for the CARES grant were mailed with stamped return receipt envelopes to all eligible students actively attending school on April 27, 2020. An additional 17 eligible students were to be given the application to fill out upon their return to school.

At the time of the signing of the Recipient’s Funding Certification and Agreement Emergency Financial Aid Grants to Students Under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act, Aveda Institute Maine a Capilo School had a total of 94 enrolled students, 85 of whom were eligible to participate in programs under Section 484 in Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965 at the time of receipt of the CARES Grant funds and thus eligible to receive Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act. As of the date of the submission of this report, out of the 85 eligible students 3 withdrew, 7 stated they did not wish to apply for the grant or stated they had no increased expenses on their returned application, 6 remain on an LOA, and the remaining 69 students submitted the Emergency Financial Aid Grants to Students Under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act application to the school’s bursar stating they had incurred expenses due to disruptions caused by the Coronavirus pandemic and as of 7/16/20 69 students have received CARES Grant funds totaling $87,836 under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act.

The formula used by the institution to determine how much each student would receive under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act is outlined below.

Approximately 150,000 in grant aid

Divided by approximately 100 students =

$1500 per student

Divided into 6 expense categories =

$250 per expense

Each student was disbursed $250 x (?) any expense category they noted as having increased on their application form with a maximum expense award ($250 x 6) of $1500.

In addition, any student who qualified for PELL in the 1920 award year received an additional PELL-based award on top of their expense award based on the following formula:

For PELL Recipients Only: PELL Recipients received an additional award which was based on their EFC. For example, a student with “0” EFC would be awarded $6195 (1920 PELL Award) x (#) of Expenses they mark on their Application as having increased divided by 61 (the number of the school’s PELL recipients which included those recipients currently on an LOA who have the ability to apply for the grant upon their return to school).

For example, a 0 EFC PELL student marking off 5 expenses on their application as having increased was awarded an additional PELL-based award of $507 on top of their $1250 expense category award and received a total award of $1757.

The instructions, directions and guidance provided to the students included the application form they completed to apply for the grant and the acknowledgment form they signed when they received their grant check.
